Carbondale sits at the base of Mount Sopris in the Roaring Fork Valley — a smaller, artsy mountain town that has become a destination for couples seeking a more authentic Colorado experience. Flying Dog Ranch is one of the most distinctive barn venues in the state, with a red barn and natural mountain setting that photographs beautifully.
Carbondale sits on the Roaring Fork near where the Crystal joins it — downstream of Aspen, upstream of Glenwood. That position is usually why couples land here: the valley without the Aspen number. Mount Sopris dominates everything south of town and is a genuine geological oddity, twin summits half a mile apart, East and West, both measuring exactly 12,965 feet with a saddle between them. It ends up in the background of most of the ceremony photographs taken in this valley.
The name has nothing to do with coal, incidentally. It came from Carbondale, Pennsylvania, where some of the early settlers were from, and for most of a century the cash crop here was potatoes rather than anything dug out of the ground. We work Flying Dog Ranch and the ranch venues along the valley. Travel is quoted up front, and Carbondale is close enough that we drive home the same night — which is exactly why it does not price like a destination wedding.
